"Diesel is worthless these days" — we hear that on the phone almost daily. It is not quite true. Drivetrain does influence resale value, but the picture is more nuanced than the headlines suggest. An overview from buying practice.
Diesel: underrated at home, in demand for export
On the Swiss used-car market, diesel vehicles have lost popularity, especially in urban regions. That depresses domestic prices. At the same time these exact vehicles are in strong demand for export: robust engines, cheap running costs, good range. A diesel with 200,000 kilometres that a garage would hardly put in the window often finds a buyer quickly through export channels.
What this means for you: a buyer with an export network values your diesel differently from a purely domestic dealer. The price difference can run to several thousand francs.
Petrol: the broad middle ground
Petrol cars are the standard of the Swiss used market — so their price development is predictable. Small and compact models with moderate mileage hold value well, because demand is constant. With large engines beyond three litres, fuel-consumption sensitivity shows more clearly.
Hybrid: demand yes, caution about the battery
Full hybrids — especially Japanese ones — are sought after and hold value. Buyers appreciate low consumption without needing charging infrastructure. The value-determining factor is the battery: a documented battery condition or a manufacturer warranty still running noticeably lifts the price. If both are missing on an older car, buyers price in a risk discount.
Electric: fast-moving market
Residual values move most dynamically with electric vehicles, because the range and charging performance of new models improve rapidly. Two things count especially at sale:
- State of Health (SoH) of the battery — a current report is worth real money
- Charging performance and fast-charge capability — they decide everyday usability
