Anyone ordering a new car hears the same question: "Do you have a vehicle to trade in?" Trading in sounds practical — one appointment, one contract, done. But that convenience has a price, and it is rarely transparent.

How a trade-in value is really calculated

A dealer taking your car in part-exchange calculates backwards: what can the vehicle be resold for, minus preparation, warranty obligations, time on the forecourt and margin. What remains is your trade-in value. Because used cars must be sold with a dealer warranty, those deductions are often larger than sellers expect.

The discount trick

A common pattern: the dealer quotes a surprisingly good trade-in figure — and quietly reduces the discount on the new car. In the end you pay the same. So the rule is: always negotiate the new car price and the trade-in separately. Ask first for the cash price without a trade-in, and only then what your old car is worth. The difference between the two figures is the real trade-in value.

What a direct buyer does differently

A specialised buyer does not sell to private customers with warranty claims, but to dealers and export partners. That removes preparation and warranty as a cost block. Time on the lot is shorter too, because the vehicle moves straight into an existing channel. Both feed back into a higher offer.

When a trade-in still makes sense

Being honest also means acknowledging where trade-ins fit. If you are buying from that dealer anyway, the vehicle is young and flawless, and you would rather avoid a second appointment, the gap is sometimes modest. There can also be VAT advantages for companies — your accountant will confirm.

The simple cross-check

Before signing the purchase contract, get an independent purchase quote. It takes minutes, costs nothing and gives you a solid comparison figure. If the quote beats the trade-in value, sell separately and simply negotiate the cash discount on the new car.

At Auto24Ankauf you get that comparison figure daily between 08:00 and 22:30 — by phone, WhatsApp or via our form. We buy vehicles of all makes from year 2002, pay cash at handover and collect the car free of charge.
