Selling a Damaged Car in Switzerland: How to Get the Best Residual Value

A dented wing, a collision with a deer or a parking bump with consequences: suddenly the question is whether the car is worth anything at all. The good news is that in Switzerland a damaged car is almost always sellable - even without a valid MFK inspection and even if it is not roadworthy. What matters is knowing the residual value instead of simply accepting the insurer's first figure.

A total loss is not the same as scrap

A technical total loss means a repair makes no technical sense. Far more common is the economic total loss: repair costs exceed the replacement value of the vehicle. In that case the insurer pays the replacement value minus the residual value - and that residual value is negotiable.

Example: replacement value CHF 12,000, residual value per expert report CHF 1,800. The insurer transfers CHF 10,200 and you keep the wreck. If you find a buyer paying CHF 3,500, you earn CHF 1,700 more than the assessor calculated. Important: talk to your insurer before selling - if you hand the wreck over to them, this margin disappears.

What damaged cars still fetch in Switzerland

The value depends less on the damage than on brand, age, mileage and demand for spare parts. Cars with an intact drivetrain are especially attractive for export and the parts market.

Repair or sell as it is?

Body shop rates in Switzerland range from CHF 120 to 200 per hour, plus original parts. Painting a door quickly costs CHF 1,200-1,800, a bumper including sensors CHF 2,000 and up. So calculate soberly:

1. Get a written quote from the body shop, including part prices.
2. Estimate a realistic selling price after the repair.
3. Compare the difference with the offer for the unrepaired car.

In most cases little is left of the repair investment - a car with accident history still sells for less on the used market. Selling directly in its current condition is therefore often the more economical route.

MFK, deregistration and paperwork

A damaged car does not need a valid MFK to be sold. But if you want to drive it to the inspection yourself, be aware that safety-relevant defects such as bent axles, faulty lighting or deployed airbags will lead to rejection. A non-roadworthy vehicle needs a tow service - reputable buyers cover this free of charge.

Deregistration takes place at the road traffic office of your canton of residence, in many cantons online. Licence plates can be deposited if you plan to register a new car soon; road tax and insurance premiums are refunded pro rata. Only deregister once the sale is final.

The most common mistakes

Never hide the accident - damage becomes visible during inspection anyway, and a buyer can rescind the contract in case of wilful deception. State "sold as seen, without warranty" in the sales contract and document the condition with photos. And do not scrap anything too quickly: a scrapyard often pays only a few hundred francs, while a buyer with export channels can offer several times that.
